Raptors come up short, lose to Elms 62-53

ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. - In spite of shooting under 30 percent for the game, and in spite of 20 turnovers, and in spite of a tough day at the foul line, the Bard College women's basketball team trailed Elms College, 50-47, with 3:33 left in Saturday's non-league game.

Elms senior Denisha Parks (Fall River, MA) scored eight of her game-high 24 points in those final few minutes, and the Blazers (4-4) defeated Bard, 62-53.

Bard shot 29 percent for the game while Elms shot 45 percent. Elms outrebounded Bard 43-37, including 24-15 in the second half. Bard never had the lead in this game.

A 9-0 run late in the first half gave Elms and 11-point lead, but Bard (4-4) scored the last eight points of the half to cut the deficit to 23-20 at halftime.

The Blazers pushed the lead back to 10 in the second half, but he Raptors responded repeatedly, cutting it to two with 8:37 to go, and again with 7:46 left. A pair of free throws by Liz Freud cut Elms' lead to 44-42 with 5:48 remaining, and that was as close as Bard would get.

Bard didn't have an answer for Parks, who finished with 24 points, 12 rebounds, three steals and two assists. Gianna Youngblood (Lakeville, MA) added 16 points.
