ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. - It's easy to make basketball sound very complicated, and for some games, it makes for good reading, too.
But Tuesday night's game at Bard wasn't about points off turnovers, points in the paint, fast break points, points off the bench, or any of the myriad of other statistical categories you could examine to break this contest down.
It was about shots taken and shots made, and Hamilton College made a lot of shots, especially late in the game. The Continentals made 63 percent of their shots in the second half and held off Bard, 60-54, to improve to 4-0.
It was a thriller, tight from start to finish. There were very few runs in the game, with Bard's largest lead at 5, Hamilton's at 6, and that wasn't until the final seconds.
Bard was up, 27-26, at the break. A 7-2 run to start the second half gave Hamilton the lead for good, but it was tied a few times in the final 20 minutes, the last time at 46-46 with 8:58 to go.
Down the stretch, the Continentals got good looks and made them, and although Bard hung in there, it just could not get over the hump.
Trailing 54-49 with 6:06 left, and Raptors battled back to cut it to one on a thunderous dunk by freshman
Jelani Bell-Isaac and a layup by freshman
DeVahnte Mosley. That made it 54-53 Hamilton with 3:02 left.
Bard managed just one foul shot after that point. The Raptors last seven possessions were comprised of three turnovers and four missed three-pointers.
Things got a bit dicey for Hamilton in the final minute because of some missed foul shots, but the damage had already been done - 14 for 22 from the field in the second half.
Pater Kazickas (Amagansett, NY) led the winners with 21 points, and Wes Wilbur (Wilton, CT) added 12 points, 10 coming in the second half. Joseph Lin (Palo Alto, CA) added nine points, three rebounds and eight assists.
Senior
Siondueh Burnette had a terrific night for Bard, making 7-of-11 from the field for 19 points, six rebounds, two steals and two assists. He also worked hard on defense to hold Hamilton's 6-foot-7 top scorer Ajani Santos (Bronx, NY) to six points and four rebounds in 30 minutes - with help from
Brandon Cunningham and Bell-Isaac. Mosley finished with seven points, 11 rebounds, five assists and two steals.
Bard next hosts SUNY Cobleskill in a non-league game on Dec. 2 at 7. If you can't make it to the game, follow it here via Live Stats or Live Video.
