Raptors lose heartbreaker in OT to Clarkson (with photo gallery)

ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. - The effort that it took to come back from a two-goal, second-half deficit was substantial, but even in overtime, the Bard College women's soccer team was playing with urgency.

In fact, it wasn't until Bard was down, 2-0, that the Raptors suddenly came to life. They pushed, dove, yelled, tugged and fought their way all the way back and tied it in the 82nd minute. It was almost as if they suddenly realized what it was going to take to win the game.

But Clarkson played the spoiler, edging Bard 3-2 in overtime to keep the Raptors without a Liberty League win for the fourth straight season.

Cailey Nieto (Chatham, NY) got the golden goal, beating a Bard defender to a 50-50 ball with a sliding shot that beat Kelsey O'Brien to the far post in the 99th minute. It capped off a thriller.

After a scoreless first half, Clarkson went up 1-0 in the 50th minute, then 2-0 in the 58th minute. Two goals in most Liberty League games is an insurmountable lead, but Bard picked up the pace and the energy and started getting after it.

Abbey Labrecque cut Clarkson's lead in half inn the 61st minute. A long shot was played on a short hop by Clarkson keeper Kim Kenline (Akron, NY), but Kenline didn't catch. It popped right up in front of her, and before she could grab it, Labrecque headed it past her and immediately began running back toward the center circle in celebration.

The next 20 minutes were all Bard. The pressure culminated with the tying goal in the 82nd minute by Joanna Regan. A Bard corner kick didn't result in a shot, but the attempted clear hit the back of a Clarkson defender and kicked out to the left of the box. Regan quickly turned and one-timed it, beating Kenline to the far post.

Nieto's heroics ended it with 61 seconds left in the first overtime. Kenline made four saves for Clarkson, 6-8-1 overall, 2-3-1 in the Liberty League.

O'Brien made six saves for Bard, 4-11-1, 0-7-0.

Up next for Bard is the final home game of the 2014 season. The Raptors host Utica on Wednesday at 7. Follow it via Live Stats if you can't make it.
