Box Score ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. - One thing you could say about the Bard College men's volleyball team, which entered Saturday with a 1-10 record: They have played a lot of good teams already, and the season isn't half over yet.

After losing six straight matches against powerful United Volleyball Conference opponents, the Raptors enjoyed a hard-fought victory on Saturday, edging Brooklyn College, 3-2, in a non-league match.

Set scores for Bard were 25-17, 24-26, 26-24, 14-25 and 15-7.

Seven UVC teams are currently ranked in the American Volleyball Coaches Association Div. III Top 15 poll, and Bard has already played three of them. To say the Raptors are battle-tested is an understatement.

So when push came to shove on Saturday, the youthful Raptors prevailed by staying away from costly errors down the stretch and winning the crucial points.

The first turning point of the match came in the third set, with the teams tied one set apiece. The set was a real battle which included 10 ties. Brooklyn began to pull away late, however, and the Bulldogs were up, 24-21 - one point away from taking a 2 sets to 1 lead in the match.

A kill from junior Henry Kasiske made it 24-22; consecutive hitting errors from Brooklyn tied it at 24-24; a kill from Jose Mendez gave Bard the lead, and another hitting error by Brooklyn gave Bard the set, 26-24.

Brooklyn never trailed in the fourth set, breezing to a win and forcing a fifth and deciding set.

It wasn't all that dramatic. Bard jumped out to a big lead - 10-4 - and won the set on the strength of a .385 hitting percentage and more errors from Brookyn.

The Bulldogs (2-4) got 13 kills apiece from David Dimitruk (Philadelphia, PA) and Dukhyun Ko (Seoul, Korea).

The Raptors (2-10) got 10 kills apiece from junior Billy Williams and freshmen Jesse Small and Kai Bernier-Chen; Henry Kasiske had 38 assists, and Daniel Gagne had 22 digs.

It's back to the UVC grind on Wednesday, when Bard hosts No. 5 Stevens Tech at 7 p.m.
