Bard rally fizzles; rivalry with Vassar sizzles

Bard junior Lamar Powell led the team with 17 points in a loss to Vassar on Tuesday night.
Box Score POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - The ancient history reads like this:

Vassar beat Bard in men's basketball 24 times in 26 games between 1988 and 2011, including the last 12 in a row in that span.

The recent history reads like this:

Bard beat Vassar three times in a row since joining the Liberty League in 2011.

On Tuesday night, Vassar added its own page to the epic, holding off Bard down the stretch for a 74-68 victory. It snapped a six-game losing streak and added more fire to a rivalry that's been brewing since last year, when Bard shocked everyone by winning its first-ever game in the Liberty League at Vassar.

Box score

Of the four games the teams have played as Liberty League members, this one produced the largest margin of victory. The last one, earlier this month at Bard, was especially painful for the Brewers, who saw Bard finish the game on a 15-3 run to win, 47-43.

Vassar (6-12, 1-7 Liberty League) didn't allow that to happen this time, but the Brewers had to be concerned when Bard cut an 11-point Vassar lead to five with 1:15 remaining the game. The difference this time was executing late, and Vassar did that.

An old-fashioned three-point play by freshman Erikson Wasyl (Durham, CT) with a minute left made it 69-61 in favor of Vassar. When Bard cut it to five again with 28 seconds left, sophomore Alex Snyder (Rutland, VT) had a crucial tip-in that proved to be the dagger.

The tie was scored once in the second half, but Bard (4-14, 1-10) never had the lead in the final 20 minutes.

Early on, the Raptors jumped out to an 11-4 lead, only to see Vassar respond with a 15-2 run. Freshman guard Nick Johnson (San Francisco, CA) went 4-for-5 from beyond the arc in the first half, as Vassar shot a scalding 76 percent from the field through 20 minutes and led, 35-28, at the break.

Bard gradually pulled closer and eventually tied the game, 48-48, after a jumper by sophomore Siondueh Burnette. Vassar responded with a 10-2 run and set the stage for the final few minutes.

For Vassar, Andrew Adkins (Richmond, VA) scored 15 of his game-high 20 points in the second half, and Snyder added 19 points, five rebounds and two blocks. Johnson finished with 15 points and Wasyl had 10.

Bard got 17 points from junior Lamar Powell, 14 points, five rebounds and two blocks from Burnette, 13 points from sophomore Chris McNaughton and 12 from senior Jeremy Arnstein, who hit four three-pointers.

Up next for Bard is a Liberty League game against St. Lawrence University of Friday night at 8 p.m. You can follow that game via Live Stats or Live Video right here.
