Bard swept by sixth-ranked NYU

Senior Andrew Cortrite and Bard lost to sixth-ranked NYU on Wednesday night, 3-0, by scores of 25-15, 25-17 and 25-20.
ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. - The freight train that is the United Volleyball Conference schedule rolled into Bard on Wednesday night, and NYU, the sixth-ranked Div. III team in the country, swept Bard, 3-0.

Set scores were 25-15, 25-17 and 25-20.

Bard started the season 5-0, but after five games in the UVC, they're 5-5.

NYU hit .522 as a team and cruised to a victory, though Bard closed the margin in each set in spite of hitting .233 as a team.

The Raptors had opportunities in each set to really put some pressure on NYU, but service errors and tremendous hitting by the Bobcats often put an end to any scoring streaks. In the first set, NYU extended a modest 11-7 lead to 22-10 in just a few minutes, and Bard lost the set, 25-15. NYU had a .700 attack percentage in that set.

Bard stayed closer longer in Set 2, at one point trailing 14-11, but another stretch of big hitting by NYU made 21-13 in the blink of an eye, and though Bard rallied late, the Raptors lost that set, 25-17.

In the third set, Bard got ahead early, fell behind, then rallied late. A 6-4 Bard lead became an 18-13 NYU lead, but the Raptors fought back, cutting the edge to 21-17 at one point. NYU closed it out without really getting a big push from Bard, taking the set, 25-20.

NYU was led by junior Taylor Fauntleroy (Santa Barbara, CA), who had 12 kills and hit .556. Sophomore Connor Mortland (Hilo, HI) had 30 assists. The Bobcats, ranked sixth in the latest American Volleyball Coaches Association poll, are 7-2 overall, 5-0 in the UVC. They next host a tri-match on Saturday with Ramapo and Rutgers-Newark.

Bard got six kills from Nick Chan and five kills and four digs from Brice Ormesher; Henry Kasiske had 20 assists. The Raptors will next play in a tri-meet with Lehman at New Jersey City University on Sunday.
