Kean too much for Bard in Skyline opener

Bard's Neena Marano is pursued by Kean University's Amanda South during Saturday's Skyline Conference opener at Dietz Stadium. Bard lost, 18-4.
Box Score KINGSTON, N.Y. - After the Kean University women's lacrosse team jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the first 10 minutes of Saturday's Skyline Conference opener, Bard responded.

The Raptors scored two goals 33 seconds apart to cut the lead to 6-2, and with 18 minutes left in the first half, it looked like Bard had righted the ship and was ready to make a game of it.

It wasn't to be.

Over a span of 29 minutes that bridged the first and second halves, Kean scored the next 10 goals and put the game away. The Cougars romped, 18-4, to pick up their first win of the season. They're 1-4 overall, 1-0 in the Skyline Conference.

Kean sophomore Stephanie Tocko (Toms River, N.J.) and senior Amanda South (Fairless Hills, Pa.) each scored twice in the first 10 minutes as the Cougars built a 6-0 lead.

But Bard freshmen Stephanie LaMont (Skippack, Pa.) and Cindy Avendano (New York, N.Y.) scored 33 seconds apart, both on assists from sophomore Bridget Reddington (Caldwell, N.J.).

Kean dominated from that point on. Tocko finished with five goals and an assist, and South added three goals and two assists. The Cougars held a 33-11 advantage in shots, a 59-25 edge in ground balls, and they won 17 of 24 faceoffs.

For Bard, LaMont scored in the second half to finish with two goals, and freshman Victoria Fleisher (Brooklyn, N.Y.) also scored. Avendano finished with a goal and an assist.

Bard's next game is on Saturday at home against Skyline foe Farmingdale State at 1 p.m.
