Raptors hang on, earn first win in a thriller

Junior Frank Stortini had 18 points and 14 rebounds as Bard earned its first victory of the season on Saturday.
MIDDLETOWN, Conn. - Bard College men's basketball coach Adam Turner will, if you ask him, rattle off a list of things that have to change for the Raptors to start consistently winning games.

That list might look something like this:

They need to shoot the ball well.
They need to win the rebounding battle.
They need to keep scoring droughts to a minimum.
They need to play good defense.
They need to get contributions from everyone.
And if necessary, they need to get some defensive stops and make their foul shots down the stretch in close games.

All of that happened on Saturday.

The youthful Raptors earned their first victory of the season in the consolation game of the Inn at Middletown Tip-Off Tournament, holding off Johnson State College, 78-73.

Box score

Bard (1-2) shot the lights out in the first half (52 percent.) and held a six-point lead at halftime, 37-31. The lead grew to 14 just more than three minutes into the second half, and things didn't look good for Johnson State (0-3). But the Badgers responded.

Slowly but surely, Johnson State chipped away but never really threatened the lead until the final few minutes of the game. That's when things really got interesting.

When Johnson State cut the lead to five with 7:35 remaining, sophomore Awet Woldeselassie pushed it back to seven with a put-back. When the Badgers cut it to five again, sophomore Lamar Powell hit a three-pointer to make it eight.

With 3:38 left, Johnson State cut the lead to four. Freshman Francis Arnold made two free throws to make it six.

With the game on the line and Johnson State playing with desperation and fouling, the Raptors made 8-of-10 foul shots in the final 51 seconds, including 6-for-6 from senior Yonah Greenstein.

The final rebounding edge went to Bard - 42-34 - and the Raptors shot 44 percent from the field for the game. They also made 18-of-24 free throws to earn their first win since Feb. 12.

Bard has outrebounded its opponent only four times in the last three seasons.

Four players finished with double-figure scoring for the Raptors, led by junior Frank Stortini, who had 18 points and 14 rebounds. Powell finished with 14 points and six rebounds, Greenstein had 13 points, and Arnold had 12 points and three assists. Freshman Siondueh Burnette had nine points, 10 rebounds and three blocked shots, including a key block with 1:13 left in the game.

Looking back ... Bard took the lead with 12:39 left in the first half on a Burnette jumper in the paint ... and never gave it back.

Johnston State's diminuitive Andy Buosono (Philadelphia, PA) , a 5-foot-5 guard, caused a lot of problems and finished with 26 points, six rebounds and six steals.

After Wesleyan defeated Curry in the tourney championship, Stortini was named to the all-tournament team.

The Raptors have some time off before their next game, Nov. 29, at Mount Saint Mary College at 8 p.m.
