Bard College Athletics

Matt Alfonso came to Bard in the summer of 2016 as an assistant coach. He was promoted to Associate Head Coach in September of 2018.

Alfonso graduated Cum Laude from James Madison University with a B.S. in Kinesiology, Physical and Health Education in 2007. As an undergraduate, he was a Student Manager for the men's basketball team. He became Graduate Head Manager as he pursued his graduate degree at JMU, and he finished in 2008 with a Master's in Teaching, Physical and Health Education.

He was a Camp Coach and Site Coordinator for The Hoop Group from 2007-2009. The Hoop Group is a grassroots basketball organization headquartered in New Jersey, which offers athletes high-level instruction and exposure to college coaches.

After leaving JMU, Alfonso taught and coached in the U.S. and overseas. He was Boy’s Varsity Assistant Coach for nationally ranked Gonzaga College High School in Washington, D.C. for two years.  While coaching there he also taught Physical Education at an elementary school in Arlington, VA.
 
In 2011, he left the U.S. for a job at the American School of Asuncion in Paraguay, where he taught Physical Education and was the Boy’s Basketball Varsity Head Coach.  In 2013, he went to China where he taught and coached basketball at Suzhou Singapore International School for two years.
