RECAP: Women’s Basketball Can’t Complete Comeback at Mount Holyoke

The Bard College women's basketball team outscored the Mount Holyoke Lyons in the fourth quarter but dropped the game 51-60 on Tuesday afternoon on the road.

Shirley Dong finished with 14 points, tying the game-high. She nearly had a double-double with nine rebounds, and she added two steals and an assist. Lexi Miller recorded a double-double with 11 points and 12 rebounds while also getting two blocks and a steal.

Erin Tobes tallied 11 points, a game-high four assists, a team-high three steals, and a block in 23 minutes off the bench. Morgan Kottka had seven points, eight rebounds, two assists, and a steal.

Ava Gregory was efficient, scoring six points on five shots plus a rebound and an assist. Aislynn Dixon got three assists and two points. Jessica Martin and Tianna Gonzalez provided depth for Bard.

First quarter action was back-and-forth, with neither team leading by more than four. Miller had the first bucket on the first possession, which was answered by six straight from Mount Holyoke. A pair of threes by Gregory and Kottka allowed the Raptors to take a 10-8 lead just over midway through the frame. The lead changed again as the Lyons responded with another six-point spurt. Bard got a three from Kottka and an and-one from Tobes to make it 16-14 with 1:46 to play in the quarter. However, a strong finish from the Lyons made it 18-16 heading into the second.

The first 2:23 of the second, nobody could break through. The defensive standoff continued after a Mount Holyoke layup, as neither team scored in nearly three minutes. The Lyons were able to get to the line and capitalize, hitting four free throws. A three from Mount Holyoke capped off a 7-0 run that allowed the Lyons to take their first double-digit lead at 27-16. The margin stayed at 11 going into halftime, 29-18.

The Lyons started the third quarter on a 14-7 run, leading to a 43-25 advantage. Tobes converted an and-one at the end of the frame to cut the lead to 15 and give the Raptors some momentum heading into the fourth.

Dong started the fourth with a three that spurred on the Raptors. The defense made key stops and the offense ignited, leading to a 9-0 run across the first two minutes. The margin was six at 39-45 when the Lyons found their groove again, scoring seven of the next eight to increase the lead to 12 at 52-40. Bard's final push came with 5:01 remaining, as back-to-back scores made it 45-52. Mount Holyoke held off the Raptors, including two threes by Dong in the last minute.

Liberty League play resumes for Bard with a road trip to Union on Friday at 5:30 p.m.
