ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. – The Bard College women's lacrosse team broke a record for the most goals in series history against the #19 Ithaca Bombers on Saturday afternoon. The series consists of six matches between these two Liberty League squads, dating back to 2018.
Emerson Embrey and
Izzi Popolizio each scored twice to lead Bard's offense in a five-goal effort. Embrey added three ground balls, three draw controls, and two caused turnovers, while Popolizio contributed two ground balls and a pair of caused turnovers.
Gwendolyn Jamison also found the back of the net, converting her lone free-position shot.
Maya Junkins and
Ella Perreault each chipped in an assist. Perreault also added a draw control and a caused turnover.
Morgan Ruhle tied for the team-high with three ground balls and two draw controls.
Keira Redmond matched Ruhle with three ground balls of her own picking up eight saves in her three periods in goal.
Victoria Rowe set a career-high in saves, with five, also picking up a career-high two ground balls.
Gwyn Downey was solid defensively with three ground balls and a caused turnover, and
Maggy Peyton had two draw controls to go with a ground ball.
Keira Redmond was tested early, saving three shots in the first period. Ithaca had a 4-0 lead at the 11-minute mark, but that was when the Raptors scored their first goal on a straight-line drive down the field by Embrey. The Bombers responded with six more goals of their own. Embrey scored her second goal of the game in the next period as time was running out in the half. After drawing a foul that set up her free-position shot, she directed the ball past the left arm of the Ithaca goalie.
The Raptors cut their turnovers in half from the first half to the second, but Ithaca's advantage from other facets of the game carried over. After six Bomber goals to start the third period, Jamison scored a free-position goal at the 2:14 mark, launching a missile into the bottom right corner of the goal. In the early stages of the fourth period, Perreault found Popolizio for a score. Then, at the 2:10 mark in the game, Junkins turned to Popolizio again during a woman-up situation, which she converted. Defensively, Bard held Ithaca's leading scorer, Lily Cody, scoreless for just the second time this season.
Vassar awaits Bard, as the Raptors travel to Poughkeepsie to face the Brewers on Wednesday at 6 p.m.
