RECAP: Women’s Lacrosse Has First Road Test of 2025 at Mount St. Mary

Peyton makes noise in return to lacrosse pitch

Maggy Peyton transitioned from basketball to lacrosse quickly as the Bard College women's lacrosse team started a four-game road trip against the Mount St. Mary Knights. The Raptors fell 15-7 on Wednesday evening.

Peyton led the team with three points on two goals and an assist in her first game of the season. She added three ground balls and two caused turnovers. Gwendolyn Jamison had two goals to go with two ground balls. Julia Champagne added two goals and a ground ball.

Izzi Popolizio contributed a goal, an assist, three ground balls, and a caused turnover on the night. Kayla Francis got her first collegiate assist while adding three ground balls and one caused turnover. Ella Perreault had five ground balls and three caused turnovers. Fae Johnson also had three caused turnovers. Morgan Ruhle added four ground balls and three draw controls. Maya Junkins had a team-high five draw controls and two assists. Goalkeeper Keira Redmond led the team with eight ground balls and surpassed her previous career-high of 12 saves with 15 saves on 30 shots on goal.

After breaking the all-time career assist record on Saturday, Popolizio called her own number to start the game, scoring her third goal of the season at the 11:11 mark. The Knights replied with three straight goals to end the first period. The Raptors drew an early yellow card in the second period, leading to Peyton's first goal of the season. Mount St. Mary had a goal to answer, but Popolizio connected with Champagne as she sealed off her defender on the cut, leading to the first-year's fourth goal and team-leading sixth point of the season. That sparked a 3-0 Bard run to tie the game at 5-5 as Jamison had back-to-back scores in the span of 2:15. However, the Knights' went on a 4-0 run heading into halftime.

MSMC scored two goals to start the third period, but the Raptors' defensive group of Ruhle, Grace Trenouth, Gwyn Downey, Johnson, Rian Sullivan, and Redmond steadied the ship, preventing the Knights from scoring in the remaining 10:19. In the fourth period, the Raptors continued to play strong defense, holding the Knights scoreless for the first nine minutes. In transition, Francis had a dime over the top of the defense to Champagne for Bard's 7th goal. However, that was Bard's last goal, as the Knights closed out the game with a 4-1 final period.

The Raptors take on Manhattanville next Wednesday at 6 p.m. in the second game of their four-game road trip.
