ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. – The Bard College women's basketball team hung tough with the Sarah Lawrence Gryphons on Monday evening, ultimately falling 64-73 at Stevenson Athletic Center.
Four players scored in double figures for the Raptors, and
Ava Gregory led the charge with 15 on 5-of-10 shooting from three. She set her career-high in threes and added seven rebounds, an assist, a block, and a steal.
Lexi Miller got a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds, plus two steals and two assists.
Shirley Dong scored 12 points on 5-of-10 shooting, and she had six assists, five rebounds, and two steals.
Aislynn Dixon recorded her second double-digit outing of the season with 12 points, including 4-of-4 from the line. She also grabbed seven rebounds, three assists, and two steals.
Erin Tobes had eight rebounds, six points, two blocks, two assists, and a steal in 19 minutes off the bench.
Morgan Kottka totalled five rebounds, two points, a steal, and an assist.
Jessica Martin recorded four assists, three points, and two rebounds, while
Tianna Gonzalez picked up five rebounds.
The two teams were neck-and-neck in the first half. After a three from Gregory to start the game, Sarah Lawrence went on an 8-0 run. The Gryphons' lead was extended to eight at 13-5 before Bard stormed back with a 7-0 run, capped by a three from Martin, the reigning Liberty League Performer of the Week. In the second quarter, the Raptors were able to stay close with timely free throws as Sarah Lawrence maintained a small 24-19 lead. The Raptors made a 14-7 push to take a two-point lead before the Gryphons tied the game at 33-33 heading into the locker room.
The lead seesawed from a three-point Sarah Lawrence lead at 8:45 in the third to a two-point Bard lead at 7:35. Six straight points were scored by the Gryphons over the next three minutes to bring it to 42-38 Sarah Lawrence. The lead remained at four with 1:22 remaining, 46-42, when the Raptors got threes from Dixon and Gregory to close the quarter strong. Around three minutes into the fourth quarter, Bard tied it up with a layup from Miller, 52-52. Sarah Lawrence took a 13-point lead after a 17-4 run made it 69-56 with 1:48 to go. Bard trimmed the lead to seven after scoring eight of the next ten points, but the Gryphons held on.
Bard opens Liberty League action on Friday, when it hosts William Smith at 5:30 p.m. for its Morgan's Message game.
