ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. – The Bard College women's squash team hosted the Bard Round Robin, defeating the Smith Pioneers, Fordham Rams, and Wellesley Blue on Saturday. The Raptors beat Smith and Fordham 9-0 and beat Wellesley 5-4.

The Raptors played against Smith at 10 a.m., and all Bard players won in straight games. Essa Kyaw had a dominant victory at ladder no. 6, winning the first 23 points en route to an 11-0, 11-0, 11-2 sweep. At ladder no. 1, Tarana Downer came through in the clutch, winning a close second game 14-12 and saving two game points in the third game to win 13-11. Tee Williams collected an 11-0 game in the third game of their match, finishing strong.

Against Fordham, Catherine Chapel stood out, racing through their match and winning in total points 33-1. Nioby Rodriguez swept her opponent, going on an 11-0 run to begin the match to set the tone. At 10-2, she only needed one match point to close it out. Minshi Yang won her first collegiate game before retiring after the second game. Kyaw had another stellar performance, dropping just six points. 

In the 2 p.m. contest versus Wellesley, Catalina Contreras-Araya was in an intense battle at the no. 8 ladder that went five games. In the fourth game, Contreras-Araya was down 8-1 before winning eight of the following nine points to tie it at 9-9. Her opponent was able to force a fifth, and the nailbiter went Wellesley's way. 

Nioby Rodriguez and Tee Williams won five-game matches, which tied the team score at 3-3. With three matches left, Kyaw brought up match point with her victory. Then, Chapel clinched the team win in straight games at the no. 2 ladder. The win over the Blue was even more impressive considering Downer vacated the no. 1 ladder, forcing everyone to step up a spot.

The team will be on its winter break until January 16, when they travel to Dickinson for a 12 p.m. match.
