The Bard College women's basketball team faced a tough opponent on the road, falling to Division I New Haven, 28-87, on Monday evening, in an exhibition match.
Morgan Kottka was the Raptors' leading scorer, with 11 on an efficient 4-of-7 from the field. She also had two rebounds and an assist. Shirley Dong had ten points, two steals, three assists, and a rebound. Erin Tobes contributed five points and a rebound.
Lexi Miller had four rebounds and two points. Ava Gregory played a career-high 35 minutes and grabbed a team-high eight rebounds. Tianna Gonzalez was close behind, with seven rebounds. Jessica Martin chipped in three rebounds, and Aislynn Dixon totalled a steal and a rebound.
In the first quarter, the Chargers got out to a 9-2 lead. The next four minutes favored the Raptors, as Kottka hit a pair of threes, and Dong added on a triple of her own to cut the lead to two at 11-13. New Haven finished the quarter on an 11-2 run to take an 11-point lead. Early in the second, the Chargers extended the lead to 15 before Kottka hit a three and a layup to make it 18-28. From there, it was all New Haven, large in part due to the Chargers' ability to anticipate passes and force turnovers.
Bard got its first three of the second half to fall with 4:49 remaining in the third quarter, as Erin Tobes stepped out and snapped the Raptors' 0-of-7 stretch. New Haven answered just over a minute later, but Dong kept the Bard offense on track with a jumper at the 2:48 mark. Dong hit back-to-back jumpers in the fourth quarter, but it was too little too late for the Raptors.
The Raptors host Elms on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. for their Fan Appreciation night and home opener.
