The Bard College men's soccer team fought, but the Raptors could not survive a late first half flurry from the St. Lawrence Saints on Saturday afternoon.
The Saints had the first shot 2:31 into the contest, but the Raptors did not allow enough time for Henry Hart, who sent it over the net. The Bard defense was firm on three early corners in the first 20 minutes. However, the scoreless match would only stay that way for a couple of minutes, as St. Lawrence broke through in the 23rd minute. In the 31st minute,
Aiden Trapp recorded a shot on goal, which went to the top right and was saved. The Saints responded with a goal less than three minutes later. Then,
Mateo Betelu had an opportunity to score, but his shot went wide right at the 35:15 mark. St. Lawrence made it 3-0 on an unassisted goal with 7:22 left in the half.
The second half was scoreless, but there were just as many opportunities to net a goal.
Jake Sudit saved a litany of shots immediately after the halftime break, as he recorded three stops at the 45:31, 47:41, and 47:49 marks. Around 10 minutes later, Sudit was tested again, saving a shot headed to the top left of the goal. One of the Raptors' best chances came in the 64th minute, as Betelu connected with the left post on a shot. He was relentless, generating a shot on goal 2:33 later. St. Lawrence charged downfield on the counter-attack, and Sudit saved another shot. At the 68:25 mark, Sudit covered the net again, saving his sixth shot of the half. The last gasp from the Raptors came with just under 10 minutes remaining, as
Colin Mott had a shot go wide left.
Julian Landau had two saves in the first half, and Sudit finished the outing with a career-high six saves. Trapp played all 90 minutes for Bard.
The next match for the Raptors is Wednesday at home versus RPI, with kickoff at 7 p.m.
