ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. – The Bard College men's soccer team took the lead against RPI early in the second half, but the Engineers came through with a goal of their own soon after to force a 1-1 draw at Ferrari Field on Wednesday evening.
Four minutes into the match,
Mateo Betelu generated a shot on goal on the left side, but the RPI goalkeeper saved it while diving to the ground. RPI had a corner at the 8:25 mark, but it was well defended. The Raptors had a corner kick of their own three minutes later, and
Henry Skeltis was inches away from sending a header into the net.
The Engineers had an open net to shoot at after
Jake Sudit came out to stop a counterattack, but Bard escaped the precarious situation as the shot went wide. With 9:30 remaining in the first half,
Mikhail O'Garro got ahead of the defense to receive a pass, got a piece of the ball, but was stopped by the RPI goalkeeper. Sudit had a couple of saves late in the half to keep it knotted at 0-0.
In the second half, Betelu forced the issue early again, driving into the teeth of the defense and drawing a foul just outside the penalty box.
Emmett Olson took the free kick, sending it towards the goal. The ball spun to the goalkeeper's left and crossed over the line, resulting in the Raptors' go-ahead goal at the 49:55 mark.
Just over ten minutes later, the Engineers tied it up after an initial block save from Sudit rebounded to another RPI player pursuing the ball, who snuck it through. Sudit was able to rebound and made some key saves down the stretch, including a shot from the right side with under seven minutes remaining that he pounced on.
Sudit had his first collegiate start, grabbing six saves. Sudit, along with Olson, Skeltis,
Aiden Trapp, and
Zac Sparacio, played all 90 minutes for Bard.
Next up for the Raptors is their Kick it Pink game, a dedication game to the Miles of Hope Breast Cancer Foundation. They will host Clarkson on Saturday at 2 p.m.
