ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. – Bard College first year
Maria Castro was named the Liberty League Rookie of the Week on Monday afternoon by the league office.
Castro went 3-0 at the top of the ladder this past week, where she dropped just eight total games. She moved to 8-2 in dual matches this season, all at the No. 1 singles position. Versus John Jay, she took a swift 6-0, 6-0 victory. Against Manhattanville two days later, she won a 6-4, 6-0 match. Finally, at Salve Regina, she took a decisive 6-2, 6-2 victory.Â
In addition to her stellar singles results, she added a pair of No. 1 doubles wins. She won 6-0 with
Natalie Lagunes versus John Jay, and she joined
Paige Houghton against Salve Regina, winning 6-4 to clinch the doubles point.
It is the first time that any Raptor has won the Liberty League Rookie of the Week award; Castro was also the first Raptor named the Singles Performer of the Week earlier this season on September 22.
