Maya Kelly Leads the Way, Patricia Santos Wins Marathon Match

Box Score NEWBURGH, N.Y. — The Bard College women's tennis team (4-2) fought through the brisk air on Wednesday evening, overcoming Mount St. Mary (4-8). The Raptors stretched their head-to head win streak to three and now have won five of their last six meetings.

At No. 1 doubles, Maya Kelly/Paige Houghton won 6-1, poaching well at net.

At No. 2 doubles, the Raptors' pair of Patricia Santos and Victoria Bagatcholon fell just short, 5-7, battling for every point.

The Raptors' third duo, Lisa Kyrtoka and Jesse Radzik, won 6-4 on the back of their returns, volleys, and lobs, showcasing their versatility.

Kelly defeated Mount St. Mary's Victoria Valencia 6-3, 6-0 at the No. 1 singles spot, where the Bard senior locked in and won the last seven games.

Houghton played No. 2 singles and took a tightly contested loss, 4-6, 5-7.

At No. 3 singles, Malaya Zabala-Cornejo improved from losing 1-6 in the first set, fighting to 3-6 in the second.

Santos won in a roller coaster match 4-6, 7-5, 11-9 against Megan Mann at No. 4. After falling down 0-3 in the first set, Santos won four straight games. Then, in the second set, she saved a match point and came back from 5-3, winning four in a row again. The championship tiebreaker went back and forth with Santos' topspin against Mann's slice. Santos closed it out on her third match point.

Bagatcholon played in the No. 5 singles spot, showcasing her improved service motion and compiling unreturned serves. She played with freedom even while the team match hung in the balance, 3-2. On match point, she scrambled to return an approach shot and won 6-2, 6-1 after making Peyton Curley hit a high volley, which went wide.

At No. 6, Radzik cruised past her opponent, losing just two games in a 6-1, 6-1 victory. The first year feasted, winning 90% of points when returning Paige Shrimpton's second serve.

The Raptors finish their fall slate with back-to-back wins. Their spring season starts with a Liberty League match against Skidmore on March 30th at 4:30 p.m.
