ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. – The Bard College men's soccer team extended its winning streak to five games by defeating York 11-0 on Wednesday evening at Ferrari Field. The 5-0 start is a first in program history for the Raptors.
Bard (5-0) had a 21-0 shots-on-goal advantage, with three Raptors scoring multiple goals. Junior
Zach Burmeister scored two goals and added a pair of assists. First-year
Henry Skeltis had two goals and an assist, while sophomore
Sam Gerber notched two more goals, bringing his season total to five.
Junior
Cole Ewalt, sophomore
Ben Steketee and first-year
Luca Costanzo each had a goal and an assist, and for Ewalt and Costanzo it was their first collegiate strike. Juniors
Robbie Boyd and
Reed Campbell also scored, while first-years
Mateo Betelu,
Pablo Ortega and
Frankie Perera-Modica each notched an assist.
The Raptors scored their first goal within 77 seconds of play after Gerber was fouled inside the box for a penalty kick, which Steketee converted. Four minutes later, Ewalt crossed the ball and Gerber scored with a diving header to make it 2-0.
In the 17th minute, Perera-Modica passed the ball to a free Gerber on the left side of the six yards and fired it to the bottom right corner. A minute later, Ewalt scored his first collegiate goal from inside the six after a cross from Betelu.
The Raptors brought on nine new players after 27 minutes of play and continued to add offense. Campbell scored his first goal after Burmeister drew the goalkeeper off the goal line. Within three minutes of his assist, Burmeister scored his first goal of the season off a cross from Skeltis. Costanzo joined the goal fest with less than one minute left in the half with a 1-2 pass from Burmeister. In the second half, the pair switched roles, with Burmeister scoring off a header and Costanzo getting the assist.
Bard closed the scoring with three quick goals between the 75th and 77th minutes, first from Boyd, and then two from Skeltis. The game ended early due to York not having enough players to continue, having started the match with just nine players.
The Raptors will open Liberty League play on Saturday when the team travels to Ithaca for a 2 p.m. start.
