RECAP: Women’s Volleyball cruises past Medgar Evers

Bard hits a season-best .349 from the floor

The Bard College women's volleyball delivered its most efficient performance of the season Tuesday night as it swept Medgar Evers at Cougars Cave. Set scores were 25-5, 25-7 and 25-13.

Bard (10-14) hit .349 from the floor, crunching 33 kills and committing only 11 attack errors. The Raptors served 26 aces, their most in a match in five years (Lehman on Sept. 5, 2018). Medgar Evers (0-15) committed eight attack errors and hit -.045 from the floor.

Seniors Emily Hall Smith and Ryan Lum paced the Raptor offense, each swinging over .500 for the night. Smith hit .583, posting nine kills with two attack errors to go with three digs and an ace. Lum swung .500 with one error and a career-high 13 aces, which is the second most in a single match in Bard history. She surpassed Erin Tedesco, who had 12 aces against Polytechnic in 1994, and was just shy from tying the school record of 14 aces, held by Godze Sevim.

First-year LaeAnna Riley totaled eight kills, while sophomore Abi Batingan added seven kills. Senior setter Adi David had 28 assists alongside three aces and two digs, while sophomore Becca Wintjen added five aces and seven digs.

Bard never trailed in the first two sets. The Raptors went on an 8-0 run to open the set and later had a 14-2 run to take a 22-2 lead. Bard sealed the first set with a kill from Lum and only committed one error the entire first set. In the second set at 4-2, Bard went on an 11-0 run to make it 14-2. The Raptors finished the second set with eight unanswered points.

In the third set, Medgar Evers picked up their pace and fought hard and only trailed by one midway through the set, 11-10. Bard went on a 13-2 run to set up match point; Batingan sealed the victory with a kill.

Bard will be back at home when it hosts Ithaca on Friday at 6 p.m. and then William Smith on Saturday at 2 p.m. for their Dig Pink Breast Cancer Awareness game.
