ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. - The Bard College women's volleyball team rallied from a 2-0 deficit to defeat Union College, 3-2, in a Liberty League match on Tuesday night.
The victory gave Bard two Liberty League victories in a season for the first time, and it provided a memorable ending to Bard's first-ever five-set Liberty League match.
"We showed real grit in the latter part of the match," Bard coach
Lindsey Veersma said. "We had to decide to cut down on our errors and put some pressure on them."
Union cruised in the first two sets, 25-17 and 25-14, and it looked like it was going to be a short night. But Bard hit .500 in the third set, winning it 25-17, then clung to life with a thrilling 28-26 win to force a fifth set. Bard was down, 15-9 and 20-13, in the fourth set.
The Raptors had 10 kills in the fifth set, Union had four, and the Raptors celebrated a conference win on Senior Night, winning the deciding set, 15-9.
"Our defensive intensity really picked up down the stretch, and that gave us more opportunities," Veersma said. "I'm so happy that we were able to get a win like this for our seniors on Senior Night."
The Raptors got a career night from
Emily Hall Smith, who set a personal best with 16 kills (.262).
Ryan Lum added 14 kills, 12 digs and a pair of aces;
Adi David produced a double-double with 37 assists and 15 digs;
Ella Small had 12 digs,
Becca Wintjen added seven digs down the stretch, and
Anna Skamser had seven kills and three blocks. Skamser and
Lily Clough were honored pregame as Bard's two departing seniors.
Nyla Lawrence contributed five kills and three blocks, and
Puja Clements finished with nine digs and an ace.
All of Bard's six remaining games are away, starting with Liberty League matches at William Smith (Friday) and Ithaca (Saturday.)
