MADISON, N.J. - The Bard College women's volleyball team opened the 2021 season with a non-league match at Drew on Wednesday night.
Drew prevailed, 3-0, winning the match 25-14, 25-19 and 25-17.
Bard was led by sophomores
Adi David and
Anna Skamser, who were playing in their first collegiate matches after losing the 2020 season to the COVID-19 pandemic. David had 11 assists, nine digs and a pair of kills; Skamser had five kills, two blocks and hit .400.
"Our team showed a ton of fortitude against a young and talented Drew squad," Bard coach
Stefanie Carrington said. "Our student-athletes did a tremendous job of making in-game adjustments and got better and better as the match went on.
"
Adi David had a lot of responsibility on her shoulders to run our offense and she emerged as a steady and present leader, distributing the ball well among our attackers," Carrington continued. "She connected particularly well with
Anna Skamser, who did a lot of work to make herself available and then converted nearly all the opportunities she saw."
Emily Smith added four kills and two digs, while
Ryan Lum contributed eight digs, two kills and two aces for Bard.
"Overall, it was a great start to the season," Carrington said. "We know what we have to work on and we're looking forward to getting back in the gym to put in the work to prepare for this weekend."
The Raptors head to Wenham, Mass., on Friday, to participate in the Gordon Invitational. Bard will play New England College on Friday, then MIT and Gordon on Saturday.
