ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. - Looking to get back in the win column following two losses, the Bard College men's volleyball team dropped a matchup with Medgar Evers College Thursday evening.
The Raptors (1-3) took an early 3-0 lead following a kill by senior
Tristan Kozul, but the Cougars (1-0) fought their way back, narrowing the lead to just one point at 6-5. Bard then went on a tear, as the home team rattled off seven consecutive points to take a 13-5 lead. The Raptors looked as though they were in control of the set, but Medgar Evers came storming back. The Cougars went on a 7-2 run to get back within striking distance, then following a brief flurry from Bard, won nine out of the following 10 points to take a 21-18 lead. The visitors ended the set shortly after, picking up a 25-20 victory to take a 1-0 lead in the match.
Medgar Evers picked up right where they left off at the start of the second, as they jumped out to a 6-2 lead. Bard then won three straight points to close to gap to just one, but the Cougars picked up four out of five to give themselves a four point cushion. The Raptors were never able to draw even in the set, as Medgar Evers pulled away each time the Raptors looked to come back. The visitors won the second set by a 25-18 score to take a commanding 2-0 lead.
The teams traded points early in the third, and the Cougars eventually created a little separation, taking an 8-6 lead. Bard, however, was able to pick up four straight points, including one of freshman
Angel Obergh's team-leading six kills. The stretch put the Raptors ahead by two, but Medgar Evers was once again able to respond. The Cougars won 10 of the next 12 points, building a strong lead and finishing things off with a 25-18 win in the third to complete the sweep.
Obergh led the Raptors on the night with six kills and tied for the team lead with 10 digs, while Kozul had four kills, six assists, and also picked up 10 digs. Senior
Esteban Rivera led the team with 11 assists, while also adding five kills and three digs.
The Raptors now hit the road for the first time this season, as they compete in a tri-match Sunday, Feb. 2 in Wilkes-Barre, Pa. Bard will first take on Wilkes University at 12:00 p.m., and have a 2:00 p.m. matchup with Keuka College.
