TROY, N.Y. - The Bard College women's basketball team, in their third of seven consecutive road games, fell to RPI by a score of 75-49 Tuesday evening.
The Raptors (5-10, 0-8 LL) played evenly with the Engineers (11-4, 6-2 LL) early on, as four different players got on the scoreboard to help the visitors take an 8-6 lead midway through the first quarter. From there, RPI went on the attack, going on an 11-1 run highlighted by four points from forward Celia Tomlinson (South Kingstown, R.I.), who finished with a game-high 18 points and 14 rebounds. The stretch put Bard in an eight point hole, and the Engineers added to their lead late, taking a 22-13 lead into the second quarter.
Bard was unable to close the gap during the second quarter, as the home team eventually built their lead up to 20 points. The Raptors were outscored 21-10 in the period and faced a 43-23 deficit as the half came to an end.
RPI continued to add to their lead as the second half got underway, and four minutes in held a 26 point advantage. Sophomore guard
Christina Kiser then went on a roll, scoring eight points in under a minute to try and get the Raptors back in the game. The Engineers, however, responded with a 10-1 run and took a 67-37 lead into the final period.
Sophomore guard
Olivia Couture helped Bard cut into the RPI lead early in the fourth, hitting back-to-back three pointers in the opening minute. The baskets reduced the lead to 24 points and although the Raptors outscored the Engineers in the fourth, the lead was too great to overcome as the visitors dropped the conference matchup.
On the night, Kiser led the Raptors with 15 points, six assists and four steals to go along with four rebounds. Couture finished with 11 points and four rebounds, and sophomore guard
Jess Rylander picked up nine points and five rebounds in the contest.
The Raptors return to the court Friday, Jan. 24, as they travel to Saratoga Springs, N.Y. to take on Liberty League opponent Skidmore College, with tip-off scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
