Bard loses pair at Rochester in season finale

ROCHESTER, N.Y. - The Bard College baseball team was swept in a Liberty League doubleheader at Rochester on Sunday, 5-0 and 12-3.

Bard finishes the season at 13-22 overall, 7-15 in conference play. Rochester (24-14, 17-7) moves on to the Liberty League playoffs.

The Raptors just couldn't get the bats going, as they were held to four hits in the first game and six hits in the second game. All 10 hits were singles.

Freshman Evan Matthews got the start in Game 1, and he didn't yield a hit for the first three innings. Rochester put up two runs on three hits in the fourth, then three more runs on three hits in the sixth. Matthews gave up five runs over 5.2 innings with four walks and three strikeouts.

The real problem was Rochester senior starter Jack Denzer, who gave up four hits over five innings with one walk and six strikeouts.

In Game 2, Rochester scored five runs on three hits and five walks in the top of the first, then a single run in the second to take a 6-0 lead. Bard got single runs in the second and third on RBI groundouts by Julian Gonzalez and Rory Maglich, respectively, but hits were just too hard to come by. An RBI groundout in the eighth by Gunnar Schichtl closed out the scoring for Bard.

These were the final games in the careers of nine Bard seniors: Gonzalez, Maglich, Frank Ortega, Chris Blake, Alex Bunnell, Kyle Zigner, Ryan Chipman, Eswar Vinnakota and Evan Richardson. They won more games over their four years at Bard than any previous group, and their collective performances in the classroom and off the field were impressive. Their impact on the program can't be overstated. They'll be missed.
