Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Four players score in double figures in Bard's loss to RPI

ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. - The Bard College women's basketball team got the balanced scoring it's been long seeking, and the result was 68 points against a Liberty League opponent, the most the team has scored in a non-overtime game since joining the conference in 2011.

But the Raptors couldn't keep Rensselaer off the boards, and the Engineers fought Bard off, 84-68, on Wednesday night.

Both teams started fast, with RPI making 12-of-18 from the floor and Bard making four three-pointers in the first 10 minutes. The guests led, 26-21, heading into the second quarter.

RPI's size advantage and rebounding edge started to take a major toll in the second quarter. Sixteen of RPI's 18 second-quarter points were scored in the paint, and nine of those 16 were on second chances. The Raptors hung tough, and it was 44-34 at halftime.

RPI outscored Bard, 18-13, in the third quarter to push the lead to 15, and the Raptors just couldn't get closer than 13 the rest of the way. The rebounding numbers at the end were in favor of RPI, 48-19, which meant the Engineers took almost 20 more shots than Bard did in the game.

It's too bad, because it was Bard's best offensive Liberty League performance since a 71-70 overtime loss at RIT back in 2014. Four players finished in double figures, led by Jess Rylander, who had 19 points, five assists, two steals and a block. Christina Kiser and Caleigh DeCaprio added 15 points apiece, Kiser adding five rebounds, five assists and three steals. And Olivia Couture added 11 points, a block and a steal. The Raptors are 4-5 overall, 0-3 in conference play heading into Winter Break.

RPI (7-1, 3-0) got 23 points and 11 rebounds from Celia Tomlinson (South Kingstown, RI).

Bard will return to the court with a non-league game at Pratt on Jan. 7. Follow that game live right here.
