NEW PALTZ, N.Y. - The Bard College men's soccer team was defeated by New York University, 2-1, Sunday afternoon on day 2 of the SUNY New Paltz Tournament.
With the loss, the Raptors dropped to 2-3 overall. The Violets of NYU meanwhile, improved to 3-1.Â
To open the afternoon, things started slow on each side. The two squads were scoreless after the opening 45 minutes, though Bard nearly got on the board late in the first half, when
Bobby Knoth hit the crossbar in the 35th minute.
In the second half however, it didn't take NYU long to find the back of the net. In the 50th minute, Oliver Kleban (Denver, CO) scored from the top of the box with a shot ripped into the top right corner.
Just six minutes later, NYU doubled Bard up, as Matteo Russo (Newburgh, NY) scored on a volley off a deflection in front of goal.
After falling behind, Bard's offense started to push forward with urgency, but struggled to find a goal. The Raptors were finally able to break through late, as
Hunter Davenport scored his first-career goal in the 90th minute off a corner from
Max Pickles. However, it came too little too late, as NYU held on for the 2-1 win.Â
Despite the late goal, NYU controlled play most of the afternoon, as the Violets outshot Bard, 26-7 and won the corner count, 4-2.
Logan Leppo continued his impressive season for the Raptors, breaking his career high in saves for the second-straight game, as he finished with 15 saves. On the other side, Grant Engel (New York, NY) collected two saves and the win.
Up next for the Raptors is a home matchup with SUNY Delhi on September 15th at noon. You can follow that contest right here.Â
