ROCHESTER, N.Y. - Road wins aren't easy to come by in Liberty League men's basketball.
But Bard made it look that way on Friday night, using a superb defensive performance to open conference play with an 83-58 victory at Rochester Institute of Technology.
RIT led, 5-4, then never again. Bard got into the passing lanes, made shooters uncomfortable, offered very few good looks at the basket, and scored several transition buckets, particularly in the first half. The Raptors collected six steals and caused nine turnovers in the first 20 minutes, leading to 12 points.
The result was 9-for-33 shooting from the field for RIT, including 2-for-15 from beyond the arc, and a 44-24 halftime lead for the Raptors. More than half of Bard's points - 28 - were scored in the paint.
Armando Dunn was a monster in the first half, as he scored 18 points on 7-for-10 shooting in just 16 minutes. He added six rebounds.
Alijah Rue had six assists in the first half alone.
Bard kept it up in the second half, growing the lead to 32 points on torrid shooting (59 percent), while keeping RIT from reaching 40 points until there were just over five minutes left in the game.
Dunn finished with 21 points and nine rebounds in 28 minutes.
David Runcie added 13, freshman
Stamatis Koulouris had 12 points and nine rebounds, and
Justyn Rogers chipped in with 10 points and seven rebounds.
Bard (3-3, 1-0 Liberty League) resumes its Liberty League road trip on Saturday at Ithaca. The Bombers beat Vassar on Friday night.
