GENEVA, N.Y. - After a 3-2 overtime loss to RPI and a 1-0 loss at Vassar, the Bard College men's soccer was more than ready for a result that would be easier to swallow.
On Saturday, the Raptors got it in the form of a 1-1 tie at Hobart.
"They know what we're capable of, we know what they're capable of, and we play smart games against each other," Jackson said. "They have great coaches and they are good every year. But to drive four hours, play for 110 minutes and get a point takes a lot of guts."
A freshmen set the stage for the draw, and a senior made sure it didn't slip away.
Alex Meci's first collegiate goal stunned Hobart in the sixth minute. It came off an incredible through ball from
Nick Shenberger, who the Statesmen were understandably bracketing. The pass found Meci angling toward the area alone, one on one with Hobart keeper Morgan Sawyer (Syracuse, NY), and Meci beat the senior to the far upper 90 for a 1-0 lead.
At that point in the game everything was even. But Hobart threw everything it had at Bard to get the equalizer. It eventually came in the 50th minute, and the Hobart pressure only intensified from there.
About 10 minutes after the tying goal, senior Adrian Colmenares (Caracas, Venezuela) lined up to take a penalty kick, and Bard's
Taylor Bond dove full extension to his right, got a hand on it, and touched it wide. It remained 1-1.
Including his PK save, Bond made 12 saves in the second half alone. He finished with a career-high 16 saves.
"He stood on his head the whole second half while we were holding on, and he pushed us into overtime," Jackson said. "In overtime, though, we had the better chances to score, I think."
The last best chance came in the 106th minute, when Meci pushed a shot wide right on the doorstep.
"Even though we didn't get a result in our first two Liberty League games," Jackson said, referring to a 3-2 loss to RPI in overtime and a 1-0 defeat at Vassar, "we felt like we could have gotten a result. So to get one here feels pretty good."
Hobart  is 3-2-3 overall, 1-0-2 in conference play. Bard is 3-5-1, 0-2-1.
The Raptors have one non-league game left on the schedule, to be played this Wednesday at 8. Sage is the opponent. Follow it live right here.
