POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - A goal by senior Jose Novas (Doral, Fla.) in the 62nd minute proved to be enough as the Bard College men's soccer team lost to Vassar College, 1-0, in a Liberty League game on Wednesday afternoon.
The first half was evenly played and ended with Bard's
Isaac Rosenthal hitting the crossbar with a lofted, bending shot in the 45th minute. But the Brewers (5-3-1, 2-0-0 Liberty League) dominated possession right at the start of the second half, and it stayed that way for most of the final 45 minutes.
A long ball played from the center stripe to the top of the box was settled by Vassar's Henrik Olsson, and he played the ball to his right, where Novas one-timed a low shot, beating
Taylor Bond to the far post.
Bard's last, best chance to score came in the 75th minute, when Bard earned consecutive corners. On the first one,
John Flynn played the ball short to the edge of the box and received a pass back. He angled out toward the top corner of the box and struck a bending, lefty shot that seemed to surprise Vassar goalie Will Marment (Stamford, Conn.) Marment backpedaled and parried the ball away from the upper corner to give Bard another corner, but nothing came of it.
Vassar outshot Bard, 20-4, including 12-1 in the second half. Bond made seven saves for Bard; Marment made three for Vassar.
Up next for the Raptors is a Liberty League contest at Hobart on Saturday afternoon at 3. Follow it live right here.
