Mount St. Mary hands Bard first loss of 2017

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - After a scoreless 45 minutes to open the game, a four-goal flurry over a five-minute span early in the second half sank the Bard College women's soccer team against Mount St. Mary College Sunday afternoon.

The final score ended at 3-1, after the Raptors (3-1) entered the contest without allowing a goal all season.

Mount St. Mary (3-1-1) was up for the defensive challenge though.

The Knights finally stopped Bard's no goals allowed streak in the 49th minute, when Bridget McKeever (Wallkill, NY) lofted a shot from outside the box into the top right corner of the goal.

Raptors' keeper, Tessa Greenhalgh, dove to try to stop the ball, but had no chance to stop it.

The lead wouldn't last long for Mount St. Mary though, as Dylan McDonald, with some help from Knights' keeper, Mary Riley (Newburgh, NY) would get Bard on the board just a minute later.

McDonald took a free kick near the midfield line and sending ball onto goal, where Riley was waiting to collect it. The keeper looked like she controlled the ball easily enough, but somehow it wiggled free and ended up rolling past her to tie the game back up.

The 1-1 score would dissolve quickly for Bard however, as the Knights scored just 44 seconds later, thanks to McKeever hooking up with Destiny Ribadebeyra (Maybrook, NY) at the top of the box.

Ribadebeyra received the pass near the 18-yard line, turned to her right and shot low to the right side of goal, sliding it under the goalie's arm.

The two would hook up again just two minutes later in the 53rd minute, except this time Ridadebeyra assisted to McKeever, as she scored her second goal of the game.

"We were caught in too many compromising positions today and they made us pay for it," said Bard head coach Billy Kelly after the game.

Bard had a few more chances later in the contest to get some goals back, but were just unable to finish them. "They made mistakes too," Kelly said. "We just didn't punish (Mount St. Mary) for them."

Shots in the contest were nearly identical, as Mount St. Mary finished with 13 and Bard had 12. Both sides had nine shots on goal. Riley finished with eight saves for the Knights, while Greenhalgh collected six saves in the loss.

Up next for Bard is a home game against New Paltz on Wednesday night (9/13). Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. and you can follow it right here.
