COBLESKILL, N.Y. - Bard College midfielder
John Flynn scored one goal in his freshman year, one goal in his sophomore year, one goal in his junior year ... and
two goals on Friday.
The senior led Bard to a 3-1 victory over SUNY Cobleskill in the season opener for both teams.
Flynn opened the scoring in the 12th minute, striking from the top of the box after a nice buildup, and the Raptors made it 2-0 less than two minutes later. A long free kick from Flynn was headed for the Cobleskill keeper, but
Brendan Byrne cut in front of the goalie and flicked one past him.
Cobleskill cut the lead in half in the 18th minute on a goal by Moussa Bamba (Bronx, NY), who scored off a cross from Emile Vwaza (Manhattan, NY). It remained 2-1 at halftime.
Early in the second half, Flynn struck again to make it 3-1. An attempted clear didn't get past the powerful midfielder who was again at the top of the box, and he blasted a low shot that squeaked through a crowd in the 48th minute. The Raptors and senior keeper
Taylor Bond (eight saves) held the Fighting Tigers off the rest of the way.
The hosts outshot Bard 14-9 and collected five corners to Bard's three.
The game was preceded by a ceremony for the late Douglas Alvarez, a member of the Cobleskill soccer team who was killed in a car accident in April. Members of the Bard squad presented orange and black flowers to players from Cobleskill before the match.
Bard will host its home opener on Sunday afternoon at 3 against SUNY Canton. Follow that game via Live Stats or Live Video right here.
