Bard defeated by Vassar in Liberty League game

ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. - Bard scored first, but Vassar scored the most, as the Brewers beat the Raptors, 19-4, in a Liberty League game on Wednesday night.

Vassar improved to 10-4 overall and 3-3 in the Liberty League. If they can beat Union at home on Saturday, they'll make the conference tournament for the first time. Bard fell to 4-8, 0-6.

Emmet O'Connell gave Bard a 1-0 lead less than two minutes into the game with a brilliant individual effort, but it was short-lived. It took 35 seconds for Vassar to tie it up, and they added five more before the end of the first quarter.

Another unassisted goal by O'Connell began the second quarter, but Vassar responded to that one with two of its own. After Corey Rich cut Vassar's lead to 8-3 with a man-up goal with 10:25 left until halftime, the Brewers went on 9-0 run that bridged the second, third and fourth quarters. It was 11-3 at halftime and 15-3 at the end of the third quarter.

Twelve players scored for Vassar, led by Chris Billups and Michael Mullen, who had three goals apiece. Mullen added two assists.

John Palermo added a man-up goal to account for Bard's fourth goal off a pass from Blake Burnley in the final seconds. Burnley led Bard with three ground balls and two assists; William Baffuto had three caused turnovers and two ground balls.

Up next for Bard is its final Liberty League game of the season. They'll host third-ranked Rochester Institute of Technology on Saturday at noon. Follow it live right here.
