BENNINGTON, Vt. - Just under 13 minutes into the first half of Tuesday's non-league lacrosse game at Southern Vermont College, it became apparent that Bard coach
Mary Kate Scardillo had seen enough.
After the Raptors scored the first two goals of the game, the Mountaineers came back, and now the teams were just alternating goals. The game was tied at 2-2, 3-3 and 4-4, but when Southern Vermont went up 5-4 with 17:03 left in the first half, Scardillo called a time out.
What did she say?
Whatever it was, it worked. Bard scored the last six goals of the first half, the first goal of the second half, and cruised to an 18-9 victory, snapping a four-game losing streak. It was an offensive explosion from a team that been held to seven goals in its last four games, all in the Liberty League.
It was the most goals Bard had scored in a game since a 19-8 win over Elms in 2014.
Freshman
Melissa Rosenthal was unstoppable. She had four goals, five assists, seven draw controls, six ground balls and a pair of caused turnovers. Freshman
Caleigh DeCaprio scored five times;
Dylan McDonald and
Marion Adams each scored three times,
Nicole Ellin scored twice, and
Rachael Rice scored her first goal of the season.
On the defensive end,
Molly Woolery and
Jade Waring had two ground balls apiece and
Kaylynn Tran made nine saves. One of the keys to the rally: Tran stopped three free position shots and one was blocked, so the Mountaineers went 2-for-7 in that category. Bard scored on 5-of-8 free positions shots.
Mel Orrell (Gloucester, MA) scored four goals, while Emily Lesure (Cheshire, MA) and Sofia Sorriento (Troy, NY) added two goals and an assist apiece for Southern Vermont (5-3).
Bard (4-5) had the edge in ground balls, 27-25, and went 13-for-17 on clears.
Up next for Bard is a Liberty League game at Vassar on Friday evening. Follow it live right here.
