CANTON, N.Y. - The St. Lawrence University men's basketball team stormed back from a 15-point first-half deficit to defeat Bard College, 81-70, and maintain its Liberty League playoff position on Saturday afternoon.
Bard's zone defense - the same zone which flummoxed Skidmore in an upset last week - caused the Saints a lot of problems and the hosts were down big early. A 22-11 lead for Bard with about eight minutes left in the first half got up to 31-16 before St. Lawrence woke up.
The Saints finished the first half on an 11-3 run, so Bard led 36-30 at the break. But St. Lawrence was absolutely on fire to start the second half, making 12 of their first 14 shots in the second half - including five three-pointers - to take a 63-52 lead. It was a 33-16 run over the course of 10 minutes. It appeared the Raptors might be done.
They weren't. Bard battled back, cutting the deficit to 73-67 with 2:25 to go, but St. Lawrence made 6-of-8 from the foul line down the stretch and improved to 19-4 overall, 12-2 in the Liberty League.
Bard is 3-20, 1-13.
St. Lawrence got 21 points and 10 rebounds from Riley Naclerio (Cohoes, NY), and 14 points, four rebounds and four assists from Kyle Edwards (Norwich, NY).
The Raptors got 15 points, two blocks and two steals from
Armando Dunn.
Christopher Rogers added 13 points and six rebounds, and
Chris Lockwood finished with 12 points, five assists and two steals.
There are two games left in the 2016-17 season for Bard, beginning with the final home game of the season on Wednesday night vs. Vassar. It'll be Senior Night for
Harry Johnson and
Chris Lockwood.
