Raptors topped by Vassar in Liberty League showdown

ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. - The Bard College women's volleyball team fell to Vassar College in straight sets Tuesday night.

Set scores for the Liberty League contest were 25-16, 25-16 and 25-18.

With the loss, the Raptors dropped to 4-15 overall and 0-3 in the Liberty League. The Brewers of Vassar College meanwhile, improved to 15-3 and 3-0 in the league.

While Bard ended up losing every set, the team fought well throughout the match. The hosts rallied from noticeable deficits in all three sets, cutting 8-9 point leads back down to 2-3 point leads.

However, the Raptors couldn't overcome themselves and costly errors on the night. In the first set, down 19-16, Bard handed Vassar the frame by committing six straight errors.

In the second set, Bard tallied nine errors and in the final set, with the score tied at 14 all, the Raptors proceeded to be outscored, 9-1, over the next ten points, which essentially ended the match.

Although the result of the match didn't go in Bard's favor, the Raptors did manage to finish with a positive hitting percentage over the three sets. The hosts finished with .023 overall and recorded a .125 percentage in the final set of night. The Brewers meanwhile, finished with a .187 total.

Philippine Alba led the way for Bard with nine kills in the contest, while Jewel Smith collected 15 assists and Emily Anastasi finished with 18 digs.

Alexis Akingbade tied her career-high with five blocks in effort.

Colette Cambey (Hillsborough, NC) led Vassar with 11 kills and Annie MacMillan (Colorado Springs, CO) finished with 29 assists.

The Raptors' next contest will be October 6th, as the team travels north to take on Union College at 6 p.m.
