Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Bard falls to Skidmore on Senior Day

ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. - The Bard College men's soccer team wrapped up its season with a loss on Senior Day against Skidmore College, 3-0, Saturday afternoon.

Before the game kicked off, the Raptors honored their eight departing seniors with an on-field ceremony and pictures with family and friends.

The seniors included Nick Shenberger, Brendan Byrne, Taylor Bond, Chris Hulbert, Jackson Barratt Heitmann, Jasper Shorter, John Flynn and Andrew Arlotto, who have been instrumental in continuing to push the men's soccer program forward and have represented what it truly means to be a Bard College student-athlete both on and off the field.

After the pregame activities, Bard had to quickly transition to game-mode. It didn't take Bard long to get into the contest though, as the hosts nearly scored in just the fourth minute off Shenberger's foot.

Denis O'Shea set the chance up by intercepting a pass near midfield and sending the ball to the top of penalty box. Skidmore's keeper came out to collect the ball, but Shorter ran hard to the area and got his foot on it to pop it out away from the goalie.

Once the ball was free, Shenberger sprinted hard into the box and toepoked the ball toward a wide open goal. At the last second however, a Skidmore defender slid in and was able to push it just wide of the left post.

From there, the Thoroughbreds locked down defensively, not allowing Bard another shot on goal the rest of the game. The visitors also turned it on offensively, using a five-minute stretch early in the first half to score all three of their goals.

The stretch began in the 11th minute, when Augustine Okoye (Abuja, Nigeria) beat Bond to left side of goal from just inside the box.

A minute later, after a Bard turnover right outside of the box, Matt Schwab (Stowe, VT) collected his own rebound and scored, following an inital save by Bond.

Kevin Santos (Framingham, MA) finished the run for Skidmore with his goal in the 15th minute.

The result was exactly what Skidmore needed to keep its playoff chances alive. With the win over Bard and Clarkson's 2-1 victory over RPI earlier Saturday, the Thoroughbreds were able to sneak into the Liberty League playoffs as the sixth seed.

As for Bard, the day was really all about its seniors. Bond finished his career with seven saves, while Hulbert, Byrne, Flynn and Shenberger all recorded shots in their final contest.

The Raptors finished the season 3-12-1 overall and 0-8-1 in the Liberty League.
