Raptors fall in Liberty League opener vs. Vassar, 18-11

ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. - The Bard College women's lacrosse team lost its Liberty League opener, 18-11, to Vassar College on Friday afternoon.

The 11 goals scored set a new high mark for most goals scored in a Liberty League game for the Raptors, who joined the conference in 2012. The previous high was in a 17-10 loss to Clarkson in 2013.

Bard got down 7-2 early, then played the Brewers tough the rest of the way, being outscored 11-9 in the final 37-plus minutes of the game.

Freshman Casey Witte scored at the buzzer to pull Bard to within 9-4 at halftime, but Vassar (5-2 overall, 1-0 Liberty League) scored the first three goals of the second half to go up, 12-4. The teams traded goals back and forth for a while, then Bard scored three of the last four goals of the game.

Vassar went 14-for-14 on clears and collected 20 ground balls to Bard's eight. Ten players scored for the winners, led by Emily Hamburger (Clarksville, MD), who had four goals. Junior Phoebe Hankins (Belvedere, CA) had a goal and six assists, and Lindsay Wolk (Parkland, FL) had three goals and one assist. Kristin Caolo made six saves.

For Bard, Witte and Nicole Ellin scored four goals apiece, and Ellin had five draw controls. Alexandra Clarke added one goal, two assists and four draw controls. Carla Sanchez scored twice, and Kaylynn Tran made seven saves.

Bard will be right back on the field on Saturday, for a 4 p.m. non-league game against Stockton University. Follow it live right here.
