Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

Big second-half rally, key late saves give Bard 9-8 win over Wesley

DOVER, Del. - Down 5-2 at halftime, the Bard College women's lacrosse team had to be wondering what it had to do to slide a few more shots past Wesley College goalie Savannah Clough, who stopped seven of nine shots in the first half.

They figured it out.

Bard scored six straight goals to start the second half, then hung on down the stretch for a hard-fought 9-8 victory over Wesley in the first meeting between the schools on Thursday afternoon.

Bard's second straight win marked just the second time in the program's history that the team rallied from a three-goal halftime deficit to win. The first time was in 2010 - the first year Bard had women's lacrosse - when the Raptors came back from 6-3 down to beat Wells, 8-7, marking the historic first win for the program.

And not since 2011 had Bard come back from three goals down to win a game. At SUNY Maritime that season, the Raptors were down 4-1 early before coming back to win, 13-11.

Bard (2-2) scored three goals in the first four minutes of the second half time tie it, 5-5 - two from Nicole Ellin, one from Alexandra Clarke. Then the Raptors tacked on three more - Dylan McDonald, Marion Adams and Ellin - to make it 8-5 with just over 17 minutes left in the game. It seemed like a pretty good cushion, but it didn't last long.

Wesley scored consecutive goals less than a minute apart to make it 8-7 with 12:51 left. The Wolverines collected the next draw control, and set up on offense with a chance to tie. But Ellin caused a turnover, Bard cleared it, and Adams cashed in off an assist from Casey Witte to make it 9-7. That was the eventual game-winner.

Wesley scored with just over eight minutes left to make it 9-8, and it was nail-biting time. Kaylynn Tran made a big save with 4:24 to go, then stopped a free position shot with 1:16 left. Wesley shot wide with 29 seconds left, then turned it over, and Bard prevailed.

Fallon Fore (Hampstead, MD) and Paige Brehm (Elverson, PA) scored two goals apiece for Wesley (2-6). Clough (Dundalk, MD) finished with eight saves.

Ellin had three goals and an assist to lead Bard. McDonald and Adams each scored twice, and Clarke finished with a goal, two assists, five draw controls, four caused turnovers and five ground balls. Molly Woolery caused three turnovers in Bard's defensive third, and Tran made five saves.
