ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. - The Bard College women's basketball team lost to SUNY Cobleskill Saturday afternoon, 64-45.
The Raptors (0-8) began the day ice cold from the field. Bard played nearly the entire first quarter before hitting a field goal. The spell was finally broken with 1:28 remaining thanks to a jumper in the lane from
Annie Kissel. After the first ten minutes, the Fighting Tigers of Cobleskill (5-3) led, 13-6.
During the second quarter, Bard began to rally. With 3:29 remaining in the half, a pair of free throws from
Alexis Akingbade cut Cobleskill's lead to just three points, 18-15.
Following the free throws, the Fighting Tigers went on an 8-0 run to regain their double-digit lead, 26-15. Bard responded with a three pointer from
Caleigh DeCaprio, but a tip in right before the halftime horn gave Cobleskill a 28-18 lead at the break.
The Raptors came back from the break ready to go offensively. They put up one of their best quarters of the season, scoring 19 points in the 10 minutes. Unfortunately for Bard, they seemed to leave their defensive mojo in the locker room, as they allowed Cobleskill to score 20 points in the frame. The visitors lead, 48-37, after three.
Bard scored the opening basket of the fourth quarter on a jumper from
Sarah Morris to cut the deficit to single digits once again. However, that was as close as the hosts would get the rest of the way.
The Raptors were led on the afternoon by Kissel, who scored 12 points and grabbed seven rebounds, both of which were team-highs. Akingbade and Morris each finished with seven points, five boards and three steals, while DeCaprio scored eight points. The team as a whole struggled from the field, hitting just 30 percent of their shots.
As for the Fighting Tigers, the team shot nearly 40 percent from the field and easily outrebounded Bard, 48-32. That discrepancy on the boards was due mostly to the hustle of Shelby Preston (Ravena, NY), who finished the game with 18 rebounds. Ashley Creighton (Niskayuna, NY) scored a game-high 20 points for the visitors.
Up next for Bard is the holiday break, which means the team won't be back in action again until 2017. The Raptors will return, January 6th, as Liberty League play begins. They will host William Smith College at 6 p.m.
