Raptors finish season with loss to Vassar

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y.- The Bard College women's soccer team lost its season finale Tuesday afternoon, 3-0, at Vassar College.

The Raptors had already been eliminated from postseason play, but were looking to play spoiler to the Brewers (9-6-1, 6-1 Liberty League), who with a victory would clinch a home Liberty League playoff game next week.

In the first half, Bard held firm as the first 45 minutes ended with a 0-0 score line, as neither side could take advantage of opportunities.

Vassar scored in the first minute of the second half, however, and it proved to be the game-winner.

Just :51 seconds into the period, Savannah Cutler (Deer Park, TX) broke the deadlock, putting Vassar in the lead. The Brewers sent a cross into the box that Bard keeper Kelsey O'Brien attempted to deal with by punching it away, except the ball wasn't cleared far enough. It was collected in the box by Rebecca Andrews (Los Altos, CA), who quickly passed to Cutler, who beat O'Brien into the top left corner of the net.

From there, Vassar continued to pressure Bard's defense, adding a second goal in the 55th minute thanks again to Cutler. She broke away from the back line of Bard and made a great run down the right side of the field. As she raced toward goal, Audrey Pillsbury (Laguna Beach, CA) made a second run and Cutler found her right in front of net. Pillsbury calmly slotted the shot to the far left side of net as O'Brien was unable to get a hand on the ball.

Vassar finished off the day with a third goal in the 73rd minute thanks to great passing, which ended with Sara Seper (New Hyde Park, NY) scoring.

Bard did have a few opportunities late in the second half, including an Avalon Qian shot that went just wide in the 75th minute and a free kick cross that was just inches away from Julia Gibson's head a few minutes later,  but the Raptors were unable to break through.

O'Brien finished the final game of her career with 11 saves for the Raptors, while Stephanie Tapolsky (Louisville, KY) had one for the hosts.

As the final horn sounded, all the players on the field and bench come over to hug departing seniors Clara Gallagher and Kelsey O'Brien. Both have meant so much to the development of the team over the past four years and the pair will be missed on and off the field for sure.

Bard finishes the 2016 season at 7-10.
