ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. - There was something off about Bard's body language after Friday's double overtime men's soccer loss to Hobart.
The Raptors looked fried, to be blunt. They appeared to be mentally and physically exhausted, they were 0-4 in the Liberty League, they hadn't scored a goal in a conference game, and their best two performances resulted in a pair of 1-0 double overtime losses.
Something had to give on Saturday.
In spite of looking tired and getting outshot 10-2 in the first half, the Raptors found a second wind and scored twice in the span of 2:20 in the second half to beat Rochester Institute of Technology, 2-0. It was Bard's first win against RIT since joining the Liberty League in 2011.Â
The Tigers, who have been having their own issues scoring goals this fall, were the better side in the first half. They knocked the ball around, and they produced three corners and five shots on goal. Bard had no corners and one easy shot on goal from long range.
Bard started to come on as the second half wore on, and RIT started to look a little tired. The game changed when Bard inserted senior
Mark Mannara into the game in the 73rd minute. He provided instant offense, created pressure up top, and it resulted into two consecutive corners for the Raptors.
The second one, by
John Flynn, found the head of
Antonio Scanni, and he scored to the far post to make it 1-0 in the 78th minute.
Just over two minutes later, a free kick from Flynn rolled directly into the box from distance, Mannara collected it, turned and beat Peter Cinibulk (Bellbrook, OH) just inside the post from 12 yards and it was 2-0.
Bard hung on from there to improve to 6-5-3 overall, 1-4-0 in the Liberty League. RIT is 4-7-3, 1-4-1.
Taylor Bond made seven saves for Bard; Cinibulk had two for RIT.
