ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. - The Bard College women's basketball team had one of its poorest shooting halves in recent memory - 2-for-21 - and still managed to make a game of it in the second half against Clarkson University on Saturday afternoon.
Down 10 at halftime, Bard ended the third quarter on a 13-3 run to cut Clarkson's lead to 40-34. Thirty turnovers, however, did the Raptors in. They lost, 52-43, and Clarkson has won 10 in a row. The Golden Knights improved to 15-4 overall and 8-2 in the Liberty League; Bard is 5-15, 0-11.
It was not a pretty game from the start, as both teams struggled from the field and the defenses dominated. It was 11-7 after one quarter and 25-15 at half. Eleven of Bard's 15 points came at the foul line.
The third quarter began similarly but ended with an impressive Bard run, culminating with an old-fashioned three-point play by
Alexis Akingbade at the buzzer to make it 40-34 entering the final stanza.
With 8:28 left, the lead was just five, but Bard turned it over on four of its next six possessions, and the lead went back into double-digits until the final minute.
Devin Sorell (Hannibal, NY) led Clarkson with 11 points and Ashley Loggins (Albany, NY) added 10.
Bard got 14 points from
Bianka Bell, 13 points and 16 rebounds from
Tytravia Riley, and eight points apiece from
Sarah Morris and Akingbade. Akingbade added 16 rebounds and a block.
Up next for Bard is a Liberty League game against Rochester Institute of Technology at home on Friday night at 6. Follow it live right here.
