Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

Raptors stun SUNY Poly with two goals in final 45 seconds, prevail 10-9

UTICA, N.Y. - It was fitting that senior Joanna Regan was the one holding the ball with 19 seconds left in a tie game for a free position shot at SUNY Polytechnic on Tuesday night.

After all, she had five goals and an assist already. Why not put the game in her hands?

Regan went high and tucked a shot just under the crossbar, capping a stunning rally as the Raptors defeated the Wildcats, 10-9, with two goals in the final 45 seconds.

Regan wasn't the only hero in this one, though. Several stepped forward in the final few minutes.

Bard (2-9) got up 4-1 early and led, 6-4 at halftime. But SUNY Poly and a lot of turnovers allowed the Wildcats to tie the game in the first few minutes of the second half. Even after Regan and Alexandra Clarke made it 8-6 with goals 50 seconds apart, SUNY Poly roared back with three straight goals to make it 9-8 with 13:57 left in the game.

What followed was the longest goal-less stretch of the game. In a gritty, physical battle, the teams went back and forth. Bard freshman keeper Kaylynn Tran, who had yielded four goals on six shots in the first half, suddenly started stopping everything. She stopped six of 11 shots in the second half, and at least two free position attempts were blocked by Bard defenders down the stretch.

The Wildcats (5-5) had the ball on offense with two minutes left and a one-goal lead, but they turned it over. Gemma Godfrey pounced on the ground ball, the Raptors successfully cleared it, and freshman Philippine Alba tied it with her second goal of the year with just 45 seconds left on the clock.

Regan won the crucial ensuing draw control - at the time her sixth of the game - and the Raptors worked the ball into the offensive zone. Regan was fouled and went top shelf with the free position shot with 19 seconds left.

If that wasn't enough, Regan won the next draw control, too, and the game ended. It was Bard's fourth-ever win against an above-.500 team, and its first since 2012.

Regan finished with six goals and an assist, a game-high 11 ground balls and seven draw controls. Clarke scored twice and Hannah Durham added a single goal. Molly Woolery had four ground balls on the defensive end and Tran finished with eight saves.

Freshman Hope Cerasuolo (Jamestown, NY) led the Wildcats with three goals.

Bard will play its last road game of 2015 with a Liberty League contest at Vassar on Saturday at 4. You can follow that game via Live Stats or Live Video right here.
