ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. - More than just a few times Bard was out of Saturday's game against Rochester Institute of Technology.
It was over. They were down 12 in the first half, then came back. They were down 11 in the second half, then came back. They got down nine after tying it in the second half, then came back and tied it
again.
In the end, a couple of key possessions late proved to be the difference as RIT held off Bard, 75-67, in a Liberty League game.
Down a dozen early, Bard cut RIT's halftime lead to 27-22. The Tigers pushed it back to 11, but the Raptors slowly, surely started to creep back into it. They cut it to five with 9:53 left in the game. They cut it to two, two minutes later.
With 6:56 to go, a jumper by senior
Liz Freud tied the game at 53-53.
The 9-0 run by RIT that ensued was surely the last nail in the coffin ... but it wasn't. Consecutive three-pointers by
Joanna Regan and
Bianka Bell cut it to three; a foul shot by
Tytravia Riley and a layup by Bell tied it at 62-62 with 2:03 left.
The pivotal possessions of the game followed. RIT sophomore Taylor Burns (Rochester, NY) got fouled making a three-pointer, and hit the foul shot for a four-point play, to make it 66-62. On Bard's next possession, she swatted the shot of Bard's
Tytravia Riley and grabbed the rebound herself. The Raptors did cut it to 67-64 with 55 seconds left, but the Tigers made their free throws and improved to 11-12 overall, 5-9 in the Liberty League. Bard is 4-18, 0-14.
Burns had 17 of her game-high 21 points in the second half for RIT. Jessica Glaz (Rockaway Beach, NY) added 20 points and 10 rebounds.
The Raptors got 20 points and 21 rebounds from Riley, 14 points from Bell, and 11 points apiece from Regan and
Gabriela Piercy.
Bard has three games remaining, two in conference play. First, they host Vassar on Wednesday night in the final home game of the season. On Thursday, they play a non-league game at Sage, and next Sunday they finish the season at RPI.
