NEWBURGH, N.Y. – On its worst shooting night of the season, the Bard College women's basketball team found a way to win on Thursday night, and they made a little history in the process.
The Raptors hung on for a 39-38 win over Mount Saint Mary College in a non-league game, beating the Knights for the first time in nine tries. The teams played twice a year during Bard's four years in the Skyline Conference, and none of those games were close.
Thursday night's was, though.
It was a flatfooted tie heading into the fourth quarter, 29-29. The hosts grabbed a 36-33 lead on a three-pointer by Janae Graham (Orange, CT) with 4:39 left. Bard's next two possessions produced a jumper from
Katie Hopper and a put-back by
Sarah Morris - clutch shots because they hadn't made any previously to that point - to give Bard a 37-36 advantage. A layup from
Tytravia Riley made it 39-36, and Mount trimmed it to 39-38 on a layup by Jessica Rini (Seaford, NY) with 2:27 to go.
Amazingly, neither team scored a point in that final 2:27.
With 18 seconds left, Morris grabbed the rebound off a missed Mount jumper, and she was fouled. But Bard wasn't yet in the bonus, so Mount kept trying to foul immediately, producing four fouls in 10 seconds. With one more foul to give, though, Bard turned it over with six seconds left.
That gave the Knights one last chance, and a desperation three-pointer from Kayla Cleare (West Hempstead, NY) didn't go. Rina led Mount Saint Mary (4-7) with 12 points.
Bard got 17 points and 22 rebounds from Riley.
Bianka Bell produced 14 points, all in the first half. Riley added six steals, and
Alexis Akingbade grabbed 10 rebounds. Bard shot just 21 percent from the field but enjoyed at 54-41 rebounding advantage.
Bard will play its final game of the semester on Saturday at Elms College on Saturday afternoon at 1. Follow it live right here.
