BROOKLYN, N.Y. - Job one in taking on Medgar Evers is to try to stop senior Matthew Lee (Bloomfield, NJ) from scoring. Job two is make your shots.
Neither happened on Thursday night, and the Bard College men's basketball team lost to Medgar Evers, 80-64, in a non-league game.
Lee, who was averaging 28 points per game coming in, finished with 39 points and 11 rebounds. Even so, just a little more success from the field, especially in the second half, could have changed things because it was a five-point game with 84 seconds left.
It was back and forth throughout the first half, but the Cougars scored 13 of the last 20 points in the first half and led by nine at the break.
A 9-2 run to start the second half brought Bard (3-3) right back into it. Later, a three-pointer from
Emmanuel Rainey tied it at 46-46 with 13:14 remaining, culminating an 18-10 run.
But Bard managed just two points over the next five minutes, and Medgar Evers built an 11-point lead at the same time. By the time Bard had cut it back to five again, 69-64, there was only 1:24 left in the game.
The Cougars made 9-of-10 from the free throw line from there to extinguish Bard's hopes.
The Raptors, who have alternated wins and losses for six straight games, shot 31 percent from the field and went 9-for-35 from beyond the arc. The Cougars shot 47 percent and outrebounded Bard, 52-41.
Tim Quashie came off the bench to lead Bard with 17 points.
DeVahnte Mosley added 12 points, five rebounds and 11 assists.
Caleb LaRosa finished with 11 points and five rebounds, and
Brandon Cunningham chipped in with five points and 11 rebounds.
Bard's winter road trip continues on Saturday, with a game at Hamilton College. Live Stats and Live Video are available.
