ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. - A 10-2 run early the second half broke open a close game and led the Bard College men's basketball team to a 75-58 victory over Albany College of Pharmacy in its opener on Friday night.
The 2015-16 team looks decidedly longer, deeper and more athletic than recent Bard teams, yet the Raptors struggled at times with the Panthers, who trailed 35-32 a few minutes into the second half. In the end, Bard's superior depth wore Albany Pharmacy down, and the Raptors won going away.
The Raptors (1-0) led for the entire first half, getting up by 14 with 5:52 to go until halftime. But the Panthers (3-2) trimmed the lead to seven at the break, then scored the first four points of the second half.
Five different Bard players scored in the ensuing 10-2 run, and although Albany Pharmacy got to within seven with 9:39 left, Bard finished the game on a 29-19 run to put it away.
Sophomore Alex Johnson (Malone, NY) led the visitors with 17 points, and he also grabbed seven rebounds. Ryan McVaigh (Ballston Spa, NY) added 10 points, nine rebounds and four blocks.
Four players finished in double figures for Bard, led by
Emmanuel Rainey, who had 15 points, four rebounds and two assists.
Caleb LaRosa had 12 points and four boards, and
DeVahnte Mosley contributed 11 points, five rebounds, three assists and a blocked shot. Freshman
Armando Dunn had an impressive debut with 10 points, 10 rebounds, six steals, two assists, a block and a thunderous dunk off a steal in the second half.
Lost in the box score but key just the same was
Pat Kelly with seven points, six rebounds, three assists, two steals and floor burns on both elbows and both knees.
Bard's bench outscored Albany Pharmacy's 34-2.
Up next for Bard is a home game on Tuesday night against reigning New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) Tournament Champion Wesleyan, which played in the NCAA Tournament last year. Live Stats and Live Video are available. Tip is at 7.
