GENEVA, N.Y. - If there's something positive to be said about losing one-goal games, the Bard College men's soccer team is ready to hear it.
It seems that every Liberty League loss this fall has been especially hard to swallow: A 1-0 loss to then 15th-ranked RPI. A 3-2 loss to Clarkson in a game they led in the second half. A 2-1 double overtime loss to St. Lawrence - another game they led in the second half. And Friday's 2-1 loss at RIT didn't feel too good, either.
Saturday was the topper.
On the road at Hobart - which was 9-2-2 and had one loss in the conference heading into Saturday - the Raptors got up 2-0. Speedy striker
Nick Shenberger got loose twice in the first 13 minutes.
Brendan Byrne found him the first time, and
John Flynn found him the second time, and Shenberger put the two breakaways away. It made Bard just the second team to score twice against Hobart this fall.
But the Dutchmen got one back in the 23rd minute, then tied it in the 42nd minute ... and went ahead in the 79th minute, beating Bard 3-2, and giving the Raptors their fifth one-goal league loss.
Sure, Hobart outshot Bard 15-3 in the game and collected 14 corners to Bard's one. But Bard has scored in all but one conference game so far and has nothing to show for it: 0-6 in the league, 5-8-1 overall.
Hobart is 10-2-2, 3-1-2, and its looking pretty good for a Liberty League playoff spot.
Daniel Gagne made five saves for Bard. The Raptors are off until a non-league home game with Staten Island next Saturday.
